Biography
Lester Case, second son of Job.born 10 April 1789 in Granby, Connecticut. came to Granville in Dec.1805. Lester Case (spelled Leicester in old accounts) served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Levi Rose's Company. An aide of the Governor of Ohio, a Granville man, came home to Granville on May 8,1812. In one hour he raised a company of volunteers, 50 men. Levi Rose was Captain and Lester Case 3rd. Corp. On June 12 they marched to Urbana and then on to Findlay through the Black Swamp in water to their waists. There they joined Gen. Hull's forces on their way to Detroit . They crossed into Canada and had at least one encounter with Indians in the British service. 2 Men were wounded. They were surrendered by Gen. Hull to the British in August, were paroled soon after and sent home.
After this company returned to Granville there were still rumors of hostile Indians. Capt. Grove Case(uncle of Lester) raised a company of mounted volunteers, and Lester joined. They served from May 5 to 18,1813. The alarms proved false, they returned home, and this ended Granville's active participation in the War of 1812.
Lester Case married Matilda Bancroft 20 April 1819 in Granville. She was born March, 1797 in Granville Mass. the daughter of Azariah and Tabitha Pratt Bancroft.
Lester and Matilda lived a few years in Granville and then moved to St. Albans township where he had extensive land holdings. While there, Lester and his cousins, Matthew Adams Jr . and Gaylord Adams, plus 3 others formed the Licking Saline Co. The operations took place in St. Albans township, but the salt was not a commercial success.
About 1832 he moved to Clinton township, Franklin Co. to land which had belonged to his father. He lived there the rest of his life . His widow returned to Granville and died there. She was the last of Job Case's family to live in Granville for many years. Lester Case d 10 June 1866, Clinton Twp. and is buried there. Matilda Bancroft Case d 17 Aug 1892 Granville. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Granville.
